History of Cinco De Mayo

 

Cinco De Mayo is a Mexican holiday celebrated on the fifth of May. It is not the Mexican independence day, which is on September 16th. It celebrates Mexico’s victory in the battle of Puebla fought against the French on May 5, 1862. The Mexican army was greatly outnumbered by French soldiers trying to take over Puebla, Mexico. However, they fought a good fight against the French and surprisingly won the battle. Sometimes the underdogs can win and surprise everyone. It is an excellent example of perseverance.

 

How do people Celebrate Cinco De Mayo?

 

While Cinco De Mayo is celebrated in the United States than in Mexico it can be celebrated anywhere! Here are a few ways people celebrate Cinco De May.

Mole Pablano is the official food of Cinco De Mayo. It is a fun food to make in celebration of Mexican culture. Other foods to eat include chips and guacamole, tacos, burritos, Mexican street corn, or tamales.

I included in the word search the word Chihuahua because in Washington D.C. they hold an event called the running of the Chihuahuas. This breed of dog is originally from Mexico. The event raises money for Chihuahuas and smaller breeds of dogs.

Another way to celebrate the occasion is with mariachi music, shaking maracas, and dancing. Of course kids love dancing and younger kids will love shaking maracas to mariachi music.

Some places have a parade with live music, dancers, and floats. If there isn’t a parade in your town try to find one online for kids to watch.

You can play games to celebrate or have a family gathering. Group games besides this word search include bingo, Mexican food making contest, Mexican hot sauce tasting challenge(for adults), or a pinata. This activity is an excellent addition to a Cinco De Mayo party!
